Sweetgrass (heirochloe odorata) is a sweetly fragrant grass known for its strong vanilla scent. It has been used by pioneers and natives for keeping stored items smelling fresh and as a soothing skin wash. Historically, the smoke from sweetgrass was burned in purification ceremonies, thought to encourage positive influences and carry prayers up to the creator. It is difficult to find now due to loss of habitat, but once established grows and spreads quite readily. We only use our own hand raised sweetgrass.
