Sassafrass (sassafrass albidum) is a native tree to the eastern half of the United States, and was first used by Native Americans and early pioneers for many health benefits. Externally it was reported to be helpful for skin aliments, wounds, eczema, psoriasis, relieving arthritic pain, gout and rheumatism.
All parts of the tree are very fragrant. There are three species of this tree. One is found in large numbers in North America while the other two belong to East Asia. It is the one from North America that is known for its medicinal properties.
